Skin tags (Marisks)
Treatment of anal skin tags
What are anal skin tags?
Anal skin tags are small, soft folds of skin at the edge of the anus.
They are generally harmless, but may be cosmetically bothersome or cause hygiene-related discomfort.
They are generally harmless, but may be cosmetically bothersome or cause hygiene-related discomfort.
Many patients only notice skin tags when they make cleaning difficult, become inflamed, or remain after hemorrhoidal disease.
Causes
Anal skin tags commonly develop:
- After temporary swelling in the anal area (e.g. hemorrhoids or anal vein thrombosis)
- Due to repeated irritation or minor skin injuries
- After pregnancy or frequent straining during bowel movements
- Less commonly, without a clearly identifiable cause
They are not dangerous, but may become inflamed or cause an unpleasant feeling of tension.
Treatment
As anal skin tags are not an acute medical condition, treatment mainly focuses on
soothing and caring for the sensitive skin in the anal area.

In most cases, conservative treatment is sufficient, for example:
- Gentle, fragrance-free cleansing products
- Soothing or anti-inflammatory creams if irritation occurs
- Advice on diet and anal hygiene
If skin tags are very bothersome, swell repeatedly or become inflamed,
removal under local anaesthesia may be advisable.
This is a minor outpatient procedure and is usually associated with little discomfort.
